If you are not out to the people around you, it can be potentially DANGEROUS to have them see the Grindr app icon in your notifications if they are peeping at your screen. In the settings tab you can find a prompt to change the app icon. It is completely free and requires no subscription. I find it hilarious that people are downvoting you for pointing out facts. Are people really that loyal to their choice of porn site, even when it's revealed to host videos of sexual assaults and pedophilia? Some people really need to get their priorities straight. Thanks for having some sense, I was getting pretty discouraged. It's honestly so weird to me how much PH is defended here. The same site where any type of post even slightly related to nestle is flooded with r/fucknestle comments can't ever seem to find fault in what is essentially the same fucked up shit in porn terms. Taking advantage of vulnerable people to turn a massive profit. Trying to hide all their controversy in feel-good charity moves like the tree planting thing. It's just so frustrating to witness over and over again.

People don't like to think about how their actions might inadvertently support evil. They wanna rub one out, and you're here with your pesky 'reality' and 'ethics'. Its the same reason people hate on about vegans for no reason - turns out guilt makes things less enjoyable, so people would rather pretend there is no issue at all than have to actually consider their choices. So you don't like it when people point out things like 'Brock Turner, the rapist?' Pointing out why things are problematic is a good reminder to those who know, and also informs those who don't know. The alternative is ignoring and sweeping under the rug. I feel like the kind of person who would harass or alienate someone who uses grindr is the same kind of person who is looking for it on people’s phones and knows exactly what it looks like.

Grindr is one of the many reasons I hate being gay. That app is nothing but trash. The only thing you need to create an account is an email, which means that underaged kids can easily create accounts. I’ve seen many kids ~15 on there, and I’ve even seen guys strictly looking for kids, too. Drug usage is a huge issue on Grindr. Drug users use secret words like “parTy” (capital T for tina/crystal meth.) If you do a google search about this problem, you’ll find articles on Grindr purposely ignoring the drug issues on its app. Grindr is scum, not mentioning all of the guys using it to cheat on it. I could go on forever about this piece of garbage app. The last few months, Grindr has been running specials so you can see an endless amount of men, easily counting you with different users, encouraging them to meet during a pandemic. Fuck Grindr. Isn’t a notification still going to be from “Grindr” though? It’s also going to be labeled Grindr on the Home Screen. I think most people are more familiar with the name than the icon. I don’t even know what the icon looks like.

Just a lot of hook ups and (at least around here) the men tend to be quite hostile to other people who aren't "gay looking" enough. While I'm not the target demographic of the app, I can appreciate and give kudos for the developers for making the option available. The fetlife (BDSM lifestyle) app has the same feature.

here’s another solution: on iphone you can remove apps from your home screen without deleting them. just press on it for a second, then click remove and it’ll give you the option to remove from home screen or delete it. Not only do you have to be gay, you also have to use Grindr or a similar app, have a phone that tends to be seen by others, having those others not know you’re out or otherwise being judgemental, and to actually care about / be ashamed by those peoples’ words and actions. Meanwhile I've had the opposite issue being in LA. I was in a movie theater pre covid for an imax showing and a bunch of gay guys were obnoxiously showing each other all their dirty pics and stupid shit to each other without a care in the world to the annoyance of everyone else around them. Anddddd you’ve reduced the discretion of it. It’s pretty decently advertised in the app if you use it for more than a night so really I feel like only people who don’t use the app are gonna learn from this post. If you are not out you probably shouldn't be using an app that tells everyone you contact through it that you are out. Don't be stupid.

Ugh I hate it too.. but usually if it’s a serious enough Offense, I will take that opportunity to sit my 7yo down and talk to him about why I punished him. Like what exactly got him there, why it was wrong, and how to act next time. Then when it inevitably happens again, I remind him of our talk and he usually makes the right decision. But it’s sooooo hard initially to punish him.

Dark Patterns are quite prevalent in even the most regularly used websites. How many times have you logged onto a website with an intent to do A but the site tries to lead you to B instead? How many times have you had those "I didn't opt for this" moments during online shopping? This website will help you understand such tricks and be more informed against them.

There is a good reason for that. Simply visiting a URL is not supposed to change the state of the server, because it is what's called a GET request. If GET requests are allowed to change state, hackers can perform actions as you by getting you to click a link, or visit a web page that makes the request silently. State changing actions are meant to be POST requests, which is what the 'yes, I'm sure' button does.

And then says it will take effect in a couple days or a week. WTF..this is all digital. Should be instant. Someone doesn’t have to go to a dusty file cabinet and find my record and delete it.

I used to send marketing emails for a company; they've likely already scheduled the next handful of emails to go out, and the framework we used made it extremely difficult to update the list of recipients (although just about everything in that process was harder than it should have been). Certainly no way to automate the process of removing folks that unsubscribed, hence the delay of a week or two

It would have taken an unreasonable amount of money for the company that designed the system to do such a thing, and we had them focusing their limited resources on things that would be more useful and profitable for us (and I would expect any company in a similar situation to make the same decision). It would be silly for a business to go down that path rather than just inform customers who are unsubscribing that they might get a few more emails.

Not saying it's cool, I'm just saying that there's more to it (namely, convincing a profit-focused company to spend lots of dollars on something that wouldn't make them more money) than just writing a script.

Can't speak for all places, but at the place I work this because the mailing list for the emails is generated from a customer management system (CMS) and then imported into a completely separate email distribution system run by a completely different company. We send out emails to lots of different metrics and mail lists so of the hundreds of thousands of people in the CMS, an email will only usually go to a few hundred depending on what it's about. When you click unsubscribe, someone in the back end gets an automated email and has to physically go through the CMS and update your marketing preferences. This can take them some time as this won't be their main job and probably isn't a priority to them. We may already have emails scheduled 2-3 weeks in advance. So going through everything and recreating the mailing lists and reimporting would be too time consuming. It sounds like company restructuring would help but it honestly wouldn't (this would take too long to explain).

TL;Dr, most companies send out in a weird convoluted way using multiple 3rd party applications they have no control of the coding for and it's just better to carry on saying "give us 30 days" than rewriting code and restructuring everything to make it work automatically.

I'm sure that making this more efficient is not a high priority for these companies, but to be fair it is often the case that there is a "batch interface" between these systems. I.e., the list of people to subscribe or unsubscribe is only transferred once a day, all in one batch rather than on-demand.

In the US I think the CAN-SPAM act requires that companies respect an unsubscribe request within 10 days. Many companies probably mention that sort of timeline just to cover their ass, even if it won't take that long in practice.

As a web developer, I can say it’s not always the case. Sometimes it’s just because the site has a shitty backend system that was prevalent in 1995.

Often times these systems put in a two-step unsubscribe process because of email bot clicks (typically virus/phishing scanners) that can mass-unsubscribe people without the recipient wanting it. So I’d advocate for giving a tiny break due to that and not automatically marking as spam (which can really cause headaches for marketers that play by the rules).

I was subscribed to a French newspaper that I actually like but the app had issues for weeks and I couldn't access Premium content, so I decide to deactivate my subscription. To subscribe, I only needed to click on one link and enter a payment method. To unsubscribe (and it was clearly advertised as a "cancel anytime" monthly subscription) I had to email their customer service. I already feel super disappointed, but in the meantime, the technical issues is fixed so while I wait for them to reply, I kinda feel like keeping the subscription because I do like their content. Except the email reply is just them asking me to reconsider and offering me a discount if I choose to stay. I have to send a second email and basically ask again to unsubscribe. Nah mate, I'm out, this is scummy behavior and I don't like it.

In Canada they passed a law a few years back about unsubscribe from websites. Any promo/newsletter you receive must have a clear unsubscribe button at the end of it where you just have to click and no more step than that. For any situation where you don't have that option or you need to enter your email address to complete you can complain and the website will automatically be fined.

I’m frankly at the point nowadays that if it’s not already a website I frequent and trust, if it comes up with a single window between when I entered the address/clicked on the link and seeing what I went to the site to see, then in closing the tab. I don’t have time for that shit. Have assignments to procrastinate, and I want to spend that time doing something I want to do, not doing extra steps to get to something I think I want to do. My personal "favorite" is when you visit a website and before you have the chance to look at anything, there are popups asking for your email in exchange for a coupon - and the only way to make it go away is to click "no thanks, I hate saving money!"

I was on eharmony for 1 month. They have some bullshit where you can only cancel like 5 days before a pay period ends. Don’t recall the exact details. Instead of waiting until the dictated cancellation time, I simply told my bank that the card was compromised and to send me a new one, lol.

Whenever I sign up for a free trial for any service, I go in immediately after and cancel it and I’ve never had a situation where it closed my trial period.

Call Amazon! I used to do Customer Service and we have special policies in place for people who were charged overage fees.

If you don't mention the fees/that you'd like your refund to cover the overage charge they won't offer to cover it themselves obviously. It's easier to justify giving the refund if it went to a card that's not the one you signed up with, the card it chose is not the one you usually use or if you say you didn't mean to sign up and didn't know you were going to be charged.

Maybe 50% of my calls were people complaining about being charged. It happens all the time. I've seen Amazon offer free shipping and in the really small print say it will start a Prime trial.

For anyone who can't find out where to turn off auto renew: a rep can make sure your auto renew is toggled off and can even remove your saved cards from the system if you'd like.

I'm literally on the line with Amex right now because my prime membership was renewed with a card I rarely use (no idea why) and I didn't notice it and racked up a late fee. I didn't get notified from Amazon that the subscription was being renewed so I had no idea until I got an email saying I had a late fee. Pretty frustrating, but hopefully the fee can be reverted.

It took me 6 MONTHS to cancel my prime membership. Even talking to a person while getting the membership fee refunded every damn month and telling them I did not want it at all ever again I finally got someone that would tell me why it kept resubscribing. My tv, every time one of my nieces would come over on a weekend they would open Prime on my tv and it would just start my subscription automatically. Locked the Prime app and no more problem.

it is better for both human and cat if you adopt kittens in pairs

with Christmas upcoming many people will be getting a Christmas kitten. If at all possible, you should adopt a pair of kittens. Most rescues and shelters will be thrilled to help you find a pair that get along and would love to go to a home together.

For you: It's less work, the kittens will play with each other and socialize with each other as well as you. Plus kittens learn to play gently with a friend and are less likely to bite/scratch you.

For them: Cats are meant to be social and if you adopt a cat/kitten alone you are committing to be their WHOLE social life. When you're at work, when you're busy, when you just spent an hour with the cat and now have other things to do, your cat is left on its own with nobody to play or socialize with. If there is second one they can keep each other company and chase each other around the house. Having a second kitten/cat can drastically reduce their loneliness and dependence on you for any and all stimulation.

It can be hard for an adult cat to accept new animals so it is much better to adopt 2 kittens at the same time so neither has to feel threatened or territorial. Here is an article from someone much more qualified than me explaining how important this is for your animal's wellbeing

TLDR: less work for you, significantly better for the wellbeing of your future cats, adopt kittens in pairs

My mom is soooooo ready for a holiday pet. She’s 80; my dad has dementia and sleeps a lot / isn’t the best of companions at this point in his life. My biggest concern is having the litter box not be a burden for her (she’s in Tx and I’m in Oh, so I can’t exactly come by twice a week). Once I figure out the solution to that problem, holiday kittens are in her future!

Personally I’ve had the litter robot and the littermaid version. Littermaid is nice for big cats, but require proprietary bins, and so is eternally hitting your wallet. Plus the rake frequently needed cleaned and would get stuck just from litter kicking up into the tracks. The litter robot is smaller (my big cat won’t use it), but otherwise far superior, imo. The drawer uses standard kitchen trash bags and is so well designed that I barely even feel like I need to wash my hands after changing it. Plus, it has an app that tells me when it’s been used, and how full the bin is. It’s worth every penny (unless you have a giant Maine-coone).

It’s not cheap, and it’s a giant piece of furniture (just not inside where the cat goes), but I’m totally sold. My husband bought it “unsanctioned”. I was like, “You spent HOW MUCH on a cat toilet?!?” But he was right. Totally right.

There's a couple of services I get advertised to me on Instagram where they send you disposable litter boxes that you toss once a month or every few weeks. Cute cardboard ones with patterns on it- getting that sort of service might work for your mom!

There’s like a 60$ one at petco, you just change out the trays like once a month (more if multiple cats). It uses crystal kitty litter, and if you don’t want to spring for the trays every time, you can just get a bag of crystal kitty litter and change the tray every other time and then just change out the litter after the trays first use. Really easy and convenient, and you can get a good attachment too if the kitty prefers privacy/you don’t want a super obvious litter box out.

I also use slide. I've tried the crystals, the pellets, the natural stuff. By far slide is my favorite. Pellets get smelly too fast, crystals turn to dust fast, the natural ones I've tried also don't do well for smells.

Some more info people may find useful:

I have 2 cats and 2 cat boxes I scoop both in the morning and in the evening. I fill up the boxes, scoop until the litter becomes low, completely empty the boxes and scrub them clean, then fill with new litter. I never add more litter into a used box, it only makes me waste litter because it'll start smelling and I'll clean the boxes out even if the litter isn't low. When checking prices for slide, I know its a good deal if its less than $1 per pound of litter. Example, a 30 pound box for $22 is reasonable. But a 30 pound box for $30 is a bad deal. Different stores, different prices.

It's a long and often heartbreaking process

Adopting a child is not like getting approved to adopt a puppy. It's a long and often heartbreaking process, and flippantly suggesting that someone 'just adopt' shows ignorance of that fact. When I was younger, I really wasn't aware of this myself and so can't blame others for not being aware. But I've now seen friends go through the process, and looked into it myself (I've been interested for a long time in foster/adopting when my kids get older). I've also spent a good bit of time reading people's experiences here on reddit. An awful lot of people have this misconception that adoption is an easy default backup plan.

Adoption is a tough process. If you want a baby, odds are you've already been through the heartbreak of infertility. You have to go through education and approval, often pay a lot of money, and then still have a substantial risk of the birth parent backing out or worse, deciding they want the baby back after you've taken it home. (I can only imagine how awful that is). If you want to adopt non-infants, these aren't kids coming from pristine backgrounds here. They are almost always going to have special needs or mental baggage to work through; they may grow up and reject you and go back to their birth family. When you foster you have to accept that the kids are coming to you from bad situations (and sometimes from other bad foster homes), that you don't get to keep them forever, and that the real goal is to reunite them with the parent who lost them in the first place.

It's not easy or pretty, and it's important to recognize that this isn't for everyone. Me, I'm mentally torn on whether it's even for me, and I always had said I was open to adoption.

I went into foster care around about the age of two. Along with my two biological younger brothers. We were bore stair step. Neighbor reported abuse and neglect. I remember abuse and neglect. And when I was asked I reported abuse and neglect and we were removed from the home. We went to 9 different homes in two years. Several of which we were abused more than our bio parents had. We were returned once for three days then removed again. At four ended up in the foster home we would be in until we were adopted with the exception of when I was six and placed in a children psychiatric ward. Abused there for six months my foster parents came in to visit one day and caught them. They removed me and the family agreed to adopt us. It took several years. They adopted all three of us so we wouldn’t be separated. I’ve severe ptsd but because I received good and timely interventions I came out fairly ok. Have a job. Am married. But also have severe anxiety and depression. Can’t shake the feeling of not being wanted or someone taking me in the night. I wake from nightmares looking for my brothers. We slept in the same room until I was in the 8th grade because I just couldn’t not be in the same room at night without freaking out. I was too old after that. Girl has to have her own room 😊. I am older than my years with an ability to survive when needed. Ask questions I’ll answer them to the best of my abikity

Incredible. I feel very invasive asking questions. I'm a giver. I give my info. Im so sorry you were abused in both of those systems and at the hands of your bio parents. I also witnessed/expirenced forms of abuse in psychiatric wards for minors. I am happy you are able to grow from it. I'm glad that neighbor and your adoptive parents intervened on it. I hope they feel like a family to you. I'm glad they kept you all together as siblings. I endured quite a bit, but not like that. I feel like 16 at times, 30 at others. I'm about in the middle in actual age.

I am in the same position. Abused by bio mother, abused in foster care. The only saving grace was my social worker, who was able to read through my vague responses and understood I was being viciously abused. She is an angel to me.

I usually buy these products from my nearby general merchandise store (the one with the red bullseye). It is located w/in half a mile of a university campus. Up until about a year ago the store seemed to cater to the neighborhoods surrounding the area - a mix of working class areas being gentrified and professional middle class.

The selection in the "Feminine Hygiene" aisle wasn't great, but normal and I could easily get the basic, plain, non-applicator items I wanted.

Then suddenly they shifted the focus across the whole store to the university crowd. In some areas this was great (for me) - I'll never look down on a good selection of plant-based hippy-dippy foods. But, in other areas - most notable the aforementioned 'Feminine Hygiene' aisle - a travesty! Suddenly there was way more product and options, but in actual fact no real variety. A million different packages of cutesy, fancy, organic, fair-trade, first-press, unicorn blessed, glitter gilded, applicator tampons. And apparently university girls don't want larger size heavy flow products either? But four different kinds of pads that fit thongs, apparently. And every single one, an entire aisle of tampons, with plastic applicators. Organic unbleached cotton tampons from woman owned cruelty-free vegan company in plastic applicators! WTF!

It’s so interesting to hear that you would like to use cardboard applicators. My friends and I have always complained about how scratchy and uncomfortable the cardboard is and how we prefer plastic applicators. I actually wondered why cardboard applicators continue to be made because I thought they make all vaginas unhappy. I am learning not to generalize period management preferences

On the rare occasion I have a real period, I do need the applicator, because I can't seem to get the non-applicator ones positioned right without it, I'm just not that talented.

But mostly I can get away with panty liners, due to my birth control type. So I'm super lucky that way! But your post made me laugh, because I have felt that frustration: I just want the same boring stuff I've been using for the last 20 years of this shit, not this insane sparkly, shiny, "new and improved" junk. I asked my husband to order me tampons a few days ago, and he wanted me to double check so it’s the right sizes. He had went for the fanciest of the fancy, 50 % more expensive than just.. the usual. When asking about it he was all “but this one is super sliding silk embedded ultra soft! Don’t you want that?” No. I don’t need it. Just buy the cheap big pack.

Fortunately where I live applicators isn’t a thing. I get mad at the little booklet with instructions in every pack, I’d break down having to throw away heaps of plastic just to not get blood all over me.

What i ended up doing was buying a pair of Thinx period panties as emergency use in times like this. I was nutoriously bad at restocking in time. They arent great but they arent awful. They look cute but feel like a swim suite a little but helps in times like this or when my vagina is just utterly tired of having a stick of dry cotton in it. Pads never worked well for me for shit.

I’m not super pro cup or anything myself- Honestly, I haven’t had the opportunity to even try one yet, but I would really like to. I just thought the quiz thing was so cool so I always pass it along when someone might find it useful!

But don’t feel bad if cups just aren’t your thing. Certain things just don’t work for certain people, and that’s okay! Plus there are plenty more options if you are trying to cut back on your environmental impact. It may take a bit of trial and error, but it’s worth it in the end. Wishing you well!

My uterus had a spectacular fire sale last Fall, I was heavy bleeding for 32 days straight and ended up in the ER. I needed three units of blood. But the good news is that nothing serious was found as the cause and I haven't had a period since. I'm hoping I'm done. But yeah, even when I was having normal periods the Diva cup instruction sheet said something about how it holds more than most women pass in a cycle and I thought, really? Because my body is all like "Shots! Shots! Shots!" the whole time.

not the tampon, the box and wrappers! They must be shiny and have flowers and BOLD COLORS like STAINED GLASS and JEWELS and fucking CRYSTALS or whatever. The actual tampon itself is just basically the same old shit. Sure, they might try to innovate it and slap a buzzy trademark name on it. Like braiding the top of the string. Wow. Holy shit. What fucking genius got paid millions of dollars for that absolute breakthrough, truly a revolutionary of our time!

Agreed! But what really irks me is that it's getting harder and harder to find light absorbency tampons! I'm just barely a regular on my first 2 days, and a light is plenty sufficient after that. The only major brand that has them in light-only packs is the Tampax Pearl ones.

I tried switching to Lola tampons, but they just didn't work as well imo. I felt like they leaked wayy before the tampon was anywhere near full.

If anyone sees this, any recommendations for light flow but also fairly leak-proof natural tampons out there?

Whenever I tell a guy that I like a stereotypically 'masculine' thing they quiz me on it.

For example this guy and I were having a Conversation on music. I told him that I love all genres blah blah blah. He then asked me for a list of some of my favourite rappers. I obliged.

So I told him that I like (nicki Minaj ofc lol) tierra whack, Rico nasty, $ucideboy$, chief keef, lil darkie etc ..

It was cool till I started naming the male rappers.

It was like a switch flipped in him.

When I tell you this man started to quiz me on the male rappers with vitriol My goodness.

He even asked me how many sales some of the male rappers albums got, Like I don't know lol.

The sad thing is that it's not just with musicians but anything 'masculine '

They literally compose a whole exam on the topic and if you can't answer, you only like the thing to appeal to the Male gaze or you're a poser.

As someone that absolutely loves music this pisses me off. It’s always the men that comment on my tshirts. One time I went to fedex and the guy working there asked me what my favorite album was. I thought he meant because of my tattoo (Led Zeppelin) so I started saying Zeppelin songs. I forgot I was wearing a Pink Floyd shirt. He made a face so then I realized he meant my shirt. At that point, I was like whatever. I’ve got nothing to prove.

This happens to me so much, it’s gotten so annoying. I’ve never heard anyone ask a guy what his favorite songs are from a particular band. “Who are the members of The Rolling Stones?” Like bitch, did I just sign up for trivia?

Ugh yes! My favorite Led Zeppelin shirt is ALWAYS pissing guys off for some reason. At work I had some coworker I have never spoken to before practically corner me in the break room to ask me 20 questions about Led Zeppelin and to test if I am REALLY a fan or did I just buy the shirt cause my boyfriend likes them, ugh. Then most recently I wore it when I took my husband to get his vasectomy, and as I am standing there watching the doctor cut into my husbands testicles the doctor turns to me and starts giving me the third degree about my shirt because apparently 1. At 35 years old I am too young to really know who Led Zeppelin are and 2. women apparently don’t like rock music. Then he went on a tirade about his ex wife loving the indigo girls and how that made her a crazy bitch. I was speechless for the first time in my life.
